Why Grass-Fed Highland Beef?
By Luke Nuckols
Less fat and cholesterol. Grass-fed beef has one third the fat of the
same cut of store bought beef. Beef having less fat means that there are
fewer calories (there are about nine calories per gram of fat). The
cholesterol count in a typical Highland grass-fed sirloin steak is about
23.3, compared to 77.0 in lean red meat. An average person consumes
about 66.5 lbs. of beef every year. Making the simple change to
grass-fed beef can save you 17,733 calories in one year, with no change
to your diet! If your diet remains constant, you could lose about 6 lbs.
in a year just by changing to grass-fed beef. Isn’t that enough reason
to change to grass fed beef? Yet there are many more reasons which make
grass-fed beef the healthy choice.
More omaga3. The omga3’s in grass-fed beef have about two to four times
more omaga3 than grain-fed beef. Omaga3 is a “good fat.” If there’s an
abundant supply of omaga3 in your diet, you reduce your chance of having
a heart attack by fifty percent. With omaga3 you may reduce your risk of
cancer. Though scientists have just started researching the human health
benefits of omaga3 fatty acids, they have found that omaga3 can slow
cancer and even reverse it. Other benefits they have from omaga3 are
that people with an ample amount of omaga3 are less likely to have
attention deficit disorder (A.D.D.), depression, schizophrenia, and
Alzheimer’s. Only about forty percent of Americans consume enough supply
of omaga3.
CLA, another good fat. Grass fed-beef is one the richest sources of CLA
(Conjugated linoleic acid). There is about five times more CLA in
grass-fed beef than in grain-fed beef. In a laboratory test scientists
found that just a tiny percentage of CLA (0.1 % ) of total calories
greatly reduced cancerous tumor growth in animals. CLA also may increase
your metabolism, help maintain normal cholesterol and triglyceride
levels, and enhance your immune system.
Four times higher in vitamin E. Yes, grass-fed beef has four times more
vitamin E than grain-fed beef . Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant.
Scientific studies have found that vitamin E might reduce your risk of
heart disease, diabetes, cataracts, and also might slow the oxidation of
bad cholesterol preventing blood clots.
Our Highland grass-fed cattle are raised in a low stress, healthy,
natural environment. They are not fed any growth hormones or steroids.
Our cattle are fed by rotational grazing, which means that we move our
cattle about once a week into another pasture. Rotational grazing allows
the pasture to grow quicker and recover faster, raising healthier
cattle. Our cattle eat what they where intended to eat, not like the
feedlot cattle where they sometimes mix in their feed things like:
chicken manure, stale candy, chicken feathers, etc.
